Jewish family service

11/22/2021
For 150 years, the Jewish Family Service has provided families in Denver, Colo., with nutritious meals through its Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Food Pantry. Over 1,500 families rely on the food pantry each month to put food on the table, and it’s a responsibility employees of the organization take very seriously.

Many food pantries are not equipped with enough cold storage to safely store dairy products. In 2020, DFA donated a refrigerator to the Weinberg Food Pantry, which allowed it to take in higher amounts of product to feed its community.

Gabe Moe-Lobeda is the pantry program coordinator at the Weinberg Food Pantry. He says that the food pantry’s numbers went up drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic — the organization went from feeding 40 households per day to 185. Having the additional refrigeration saved the food pantry money, and it allowed for more food to be stored than ever before, which was desperately needed due to the increase in families reliant on its services.

As the largest food pantry in Denver, the Jewish Family Services assists individuals and families with many services. It offers mental health services, employment services, utility assistance, skill training for people with developmental disabilities and summer meals for children who depend on their schools for lunches. The Jewish Family Service welcomes anyone and everyone through its doors, regardless of their race, religion, age, income, ability or sexual orientation.

Food banks rely on donations from organizations like the DFA Cares Foundation to keep shelves and refrigerators stocked. You can make a difference with a DONATION to DFA Cares.
