June 23 is International Women in Engineering Day, a day dedicated to celebrating women in engineering roles and raising awareness about career opportunities for women in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

For the last 65 years, the Vermont Dairy Festival has been the unofficial kickoff to summer in Enosburg Falls, Vt. Put on by the local Lions Club, the festival not only celebrates the Vermont dairy industry, but also celebrates the local community. One of the festival’s hallmark events is the Vermont Dairy Pageant Scholarship Contest, which DFA sponsored part of this year.  

Cattle mastitis, an inflammatory response in a cow’s udders due to microorganism infections, poses a huge problem for the dairy industry, and is the most common bovine disease. When a cow comes down with mastitis, her milk is not fit for human consumption until she’s fully recovered. Treating mastitis is a big expense for dairy farmers — both in the cost of medication and the associated lost milk sales that come along with it.   

Alison Tetrick, chief executive officer and co-founder of Cheeseboard Snacking Bar, started her company with this question in mind: “Why isn't there a delectable cheese snack like the one I am craving?”  

Ten deserving students involved with Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS), a national society for students and professionals of all races and ethnicities, received scholarships from DFA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Scholarship Fund at the organization's annual conference in March.  

The Michigan State University (MSU) Department of Animal Science awarded DFA family farm-owners Dennis and Doris Tubergen, founders of Tubergen Dairy Farm in Ionia, Mich., the 2022 Dairy Farmer of the Year title. MSU awards the Dairy Farmer of the Year to farmers who display excellence in management and leadership on their farms and in their communities.   

Dairy West inducted DFA family farm-owner Brian Esplin into its Idaho Dairy Hall of Fame at its annual meeting in November 2021. Brian and his family run Diamond 3 Dairy in Shelley, Idaho. 

The Baker family of DFA family farm Bakerlads Farms in Clayton, Mich., has served as the host farm for the annual Lenawee County Center for Excellence August Field Day for the past 25 years.

Charles Krause, a DFA family farm-owner in Buffalo, Minn., received the first-ever Farmer Communicator of the Year award in November.

DFA family farm-owner Seth Bahler saw an opportunity to deliver his farm’s fresh milk to consumers through its own private label and founded The Modern Milkman in 2019.
