In honor of June Dairy Month, we’re raising a glass to the farmer-owners and employees of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) to thank them for everything they do to put delicious, nutritious dairy on family tables across the globe.
What is June Dairy Month?
Every June, dairy farmers, manufacturers, cooperatives, retailers, industry organizations and dairy-loving consumers celebrate June Dairy Month, which is kicked off on June 1 with World Milk Day, to highlight the unmatched nutrition, quality, sustainability, community focus and all-around goodness of real dairy.
The month has a long history. Since 1939, National Dairy Month has encouraged families to make milk their beverage of choice based on its nutritional value. Dairy’s rich history continues with communities, companies and people observing the month in a variety of ways.
In 2001,
World Milk Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food and to celebrate the dairy sector. Each year since, on June 1, the benefits of milk and dairy products have been actively promoted around the world, including how dairy supports the livelihoods of 1 billion people.
What we’re doing to celebrate
As a national farmer-owned dairy cooperative, DFA recognizes June Dairy Month (and World Milk Day to kick off the month) every year on behalf of our nearly 11,000 farmer-owners and dedicated employees. This year, we are:
- Making monetary donations to more than 100 food banks across the country for the purchase of dairy products through our DFA Cares Foundation. The food banks selected were identified by our farmer-owners in the communities where they live and work
- Thanking all our employees who support our farmer-owners and help provide nutritious, wholesome dairy products to the world. At our headquarters office, we raised a glass in a milk toast to celebrate dairy and all those who help produce it on World Milk Day. Celebrations are taking place at our offices, labs and manufacturing facilities across the country throughout the month, including providing treats and snacks for employees, fundraising efforts and community engagement events
- Across the country, DFA farmer-owners are hosting school tours, breakfasts, open houses, community engagement events and more on their farms to celebrate the month and share where dairy comes from with their local communities
- Sharing how DFA’s Nerd Herd, a team of DFA farmer-owners, engineers, scientists, veterinarians and more, are cutting greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable dairy farming practices
- Highlighting how dairy is sustainably made on DFA’s social media, and our family of brands' channels, on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Follow along to watch videos of our farmer-owners sharing their on-farm stories and learn how dairy — and those who make it — is making a difference in communities across the country and around the world!
We invite you to raise a glass of ice-cold milk with us and celebrate June Dairy Month. Support our farmer-owners all year by enjoying dairy products like butter, cheese, ice cream (and of course, milk!) made by our beloved
family of DFA-owned brands.
